NX250 rear wheel bearing change

Beitrag von scrambler »

In our NX250 rear wheels a retainer is used for fixing the wheel bearing on the sprocket side. The retainer is sold out – the OEM was 41231-mc4-000, also used in XL250R, XL500R and XL600R https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda ... ef9eebea4a .
Therefore, it makes sense to try to remove the retainer intact, even if it is difficult. There are various tools for removing the retainer on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/165319389434

The wheel bearings have the dimension 6203-2RS https://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_from=R4 ... =0&_sop=15 - sealed on both sides.

First you have to drill out the punch marks about 3-4mm deep. Heat the hub with a blowtorch. Place the wheel on the floor, fix it with your knees and try to unscrew the retainer with a special tool. This is not always possible due to corrosion; all that is then left is hammer and chisel.

It's easier with tire mounted and with a double-sided lever rather than with a ratchet

The wheel bearings can then be driven out using a long round steel rod. The round rod is tilted so that it rests on the edge of the wheel bearing. Heat helps again, then the wheel bearings come out after a few hits with a hammer.

When installing, be sure to drive in the left wheel bearing first; as usual, it helps to heat the wheel hub a little. Then the retainer is screwed in with a little grease and secured again with punch marks. If the retainer was destroyed - a couple were made for the members of our NX forum.

The wheel is turned and the bearing spacer is inserted. Then the right wheel bearing is driven in. Attention: you must not drive in too far here, the right wheel bearing has a so-called floating seat. It doesn't have a fixed seat in the wheel hub, but rather a few millimeters of space.

Here the wheel bearing is secured with a snap ring. With a lathe you could screw a groove into the NX250 wheel hub and also use a snap ring

There is a reason for this system - without retainer, the bearing seat often expands and the bearing loosens.

The right bearing may only be driven in so far that the bearings still run easily. The bearing should be approximately aligned with the edge of the wheel hub. If driven in too far, the bearings become difficult to move and won`t live long.
