AX1 / NX250 fairing repair

Beitrag von scrambler »

The fairing, headlight mask and rear fender of the AX1 and NX250 are made of ABS plastic. Easy and cheap to produce, but prone to breakage. Cracks in those parts are therefore common. Expensive adhesives are offered, but they often don't last long.

But there is a very good and cheap way to repair and glue the AX1 / NX250 fairing, with a homemade acetone glue. All you need is acetone and something made of ABS plastic, a piece of an old fairing or something else, for example a Lego building block. In an airtight container, put some acetone and the piece of ABS and let it soak overnight. Caution: Acetone should not be inhaled, so only work in well-ventilated areas. Note that side covers and front fender are not made out of ABS and can’t be glued with this method.

The cracks in the fairing are ground out from both sides so that a thick layer of glue can be applied.

Using a brush, dab the broken areas generously with acetone so that they dissolve a little - then apply some glue. For reinforcement you can then apply a piece of fine fiberglass mat and apply some glue over it again. In principle it works like laminating, but it also works without a glass fiber mat. If the glue becomes too viscous, apply some acetone with a brush. It takes some practice, but the big advantage is that you can always soften the ABS with acetone and restart the process.

Very important: the glue needs a couple of days until it hardens properly again. So you need patience (which I usually don't have). The glue can also be used to attach tricky areas such as the bracket fairing / headlight mask.

Often parts of the fairing are missing, in this case I take a plaster mold from a complete fairing. This allows the original holders to be restored.
