NX250 front sprocket

Beitrag von scrambler »

A very important issue is the correct fitting of the sprocket retainer (termed “fixing plate” by Honda). The OEM sprocket and retainer both have off-center drill holes so that fitting the retainer is only possible in the correct position with the teeth fully overlappung. However, some aftermarket (e.g. JTF280) sprockets have center drill holes.

If the fixing plate is mounted the right way with the teeth fully overlapping (right pic) this causes no further problems. However, with the center hole sprockets it’s possible to mount the retainer so that only a few teeth are overlapping at the edge (left pic).

That ultimately destroys the retainer and/or the driveshaft. In some cases the sprocket sheared off the driveshaft, causing accidents.

The most common sprocket offered at eBay is the center JTF280. Luckily, the sprockets from the 96-04 XR250 will fit (it was also adapted for the new CRF250L). In the newest JT online catalogue http://www.jtsprockets.com/catalogue/sprocket/JTF1321 these sprockets are now also listed for the NX250 – but there must be a zillion of the old sprockets, because I’ve never seen the new ones offered for the NX250.

There is another advantage of the XR250/CRF250 sprocket – it has a flange (flange must point towards the engine), expecting less wear of the driveshaft. The vertical play of the sprocket is also reduced (even though a bit of play is normal, even with a new driveshaft/OEM sprocket).

The retainer is usually damaged and should be replaced.

Not that the NX shaft is especially prone to much wear – the shaft to the right is the one from my Nixie after 105.000km and would have been good for a couple of 10.000km more.

Hi everybody !
I am planning to change my front sprocket for a 12 teeth as 6th gear is, here, clearly difficult to use.

consulting the web I found this AFAM sprocket, spécific for NX :
NX.jpg
according to this site fixing plate must be centered but Michaël seem to say it's not...
And more, I can't easily get 12 teeth ...

Then I looked at XR250 1996 to 2005 model sprocket :
XR96-05.jpg
these are off centered but I can get 12, 13 and 14 teeth.

And the Honda on-line catalog will say that the fixing plate for NX and XR 96-05 are the same (see number 18):
BOITE-DE-VITESSES-Honda-MOTO-250-NX-1989-NX250J-E__1400.jpg
It's reference is 23802-KW3-010 but was 23802-KW3-000 for the NX.

So I think the fixing plate was, at first, centered but causes some problems so Honda decided to produce the off centered model.
That means that some of us having the original front sprocket should have a centered one but some of us that already change it might have the new version.
So be carefull before ordering anything and check your fixing plate before !
Fixing plate off centered for XR and NX are available at Honda's.
